Mojo: The Collectors' Series: Lennon & McCartney (Part 2) - Paul McCartney
The latest artists to be honoured with MOJO Collectors' Series specials are none other than John Lennon and Paul McCartney. As the songwriting partnership behind The Beatles, in the 1960s John Lennon and Paul McCartney changed the language of pop music – and in doing so transformed the world that so eagerly embraced their magical and timeless songs. Later, John and Paul would reveal their very different personalities and approaches to their art through their solo careers.
To celebrate these two musical giants, MOJO has brought together its finest writing on Lennon and McCartney in two lavish 132-page bookazines, packed with exclusive interviews, insightful features, and iconic and rarely seen images.
This second issue focuses on Paul McCartney, The Beatles’ melodic genius who went on to enjoy a second phase of international success with his ’70s rock group Wings, before settling into a long and acclaimed solo career that continues to this day. His reputation as a songwriter was founded, of course, on the peerless ballads he wrote in the Fabs – Yesterday, Hey Jude, The Long And Winding Road – but he was also the first Beatle to explore the avant-garde and the flowering mid-’60s underground scene in London, and spurred the group on to create their proto-punk scorcher Helter Skelter on 1968’s The White Album. Later, his experiments with synthesizers would result in 1980’s now revered McCartney II album, the lead single from which, Coming Up, roused John Lennon into making his last recordings, and was released not long after Paul’s infamous drug bust and jail-time in Japan.
Beginning with an account of his Liverpool childhood surrounded by music, and his reflections on The Beatles’ finest tracks, this special edition goes on to look in detail at his drama-filled years fronting Wings, and ends with several memorable MOJO encounters with McCartney, whose millennial solo career has been enriched by myriad exciting experimental records and collaborations.
