In 1977 a song called In The City entered the UK singles charts at number 40. The record was a tough, energetic tribute to London and to youth, written with all the spirit of punk, but in the classic songwriting tradition of Pete Townshend, Steve Marriott, John Lennon and Ray Davies. It was The Jam's first single. Within 5 years they would rank with their heroes as being one of the most important British groups of all time.
First published in 1983, A Beat Concerto is the only official biography of The Jam. For this new edition, Paolo Hewitt has written an additional introduction, re-appraising The Jam both as a classic band, and as key players in one of the defining episodes in the story of British music.
A new forward is also included, written by Noel Gallagher of Oasis.
